Third-grade students in Anika Hesse’s class at Seitz Elementary, USD 475, have adopted a baby calf named Cary from Rottinghaus Holstein Farm in Seneca through the Discover Dairy program.
Born September 16th, the 84-pound heifer will be cared for daily by Farmer Stacy, while Hesse’s students receive monthly updates on her growth and farm life. The project will integrate lessons in science, writing, and social-emotional learning, helping students—many of whom are from military families—gain insight into Kansas agriculture.
A stuffed cow will rotate home with students for weekend journaling adventures around Fort Riley. Hesse hopes the experience will motivate the class to earn a field trip to visit Cary.
Community members can join the fun by voting for Cary as America’s favorite calf from Nov. 3–5 at www.discoverydairy.com/vote.
