Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson has announced that three Kansas elementary schools have been named 2025 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Recognized in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category were:
• McLean Science Technology Magnet, Wichita USD 259
• Jefferson West Elementary School, Jefferson West USD 340
• Sterling Grade School, Sterling USD 376
Before the U.S. Department of Education discontinued the program in September, the Blue Ribbon Schools initiative honored public and private schools nationwide in two categories:
• Exemplary High Performing Schools – among the highest-achieving schools in their state.
• Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools – schools making notable progress in narrowing achievement gaps among student groups.
Educators in these schools use data-driven instruction, strong professional development, and community collaboration to help every student succeed.
Jefferson West Elementary principal Wes Sturgeon credited “years of hard work and a shared belief that every child can succeed,” while Sterling Grade School principal Jamie Burtner said the award “reflects the dedication of our staff and community,” noting Sterling’s previous Blue Ribbon and ESEA honors.
This marks McLean’s first Blue Ribbon recognition, Jefferson West’s first in USD 340, and the sixth for Wichita USD 259. Since 1983, 173 Kansas schools have earned the Blue Ribbon distinction.
