Special education remains one of Kansas’ most challenging teaching positions to fill, and Kansas State University is stepping up with a new solution. The university’s College of Education has introduced an additional pathway to its Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program — the Unified Elementary and Special Education (K–6) degree.
This accelerated, 18-month program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field and wish to transition into education. Graduates will earn both a master’s degree and initial Kansas licensure in elementary and special education, broadening their career prospects while meeting a critical statewide need.
Program leaders say the curriculum equips future teachers to effectively support diverse learners in inclusive classrooms. To improve accessibility, K-State offers a Unified Elementary and Special Education Scholarship for eligible Kansas residents.
The College of Education will host an informational webinar on November 19th to help prospective students learn more about the program and application process.
