Food Safety Tips for a Safe Halloween

As temperatures drop and leaves fall, Halloween is just around the corner. While the holiday isn’t typically seen as a major food safety risk, perishable foods left out too long can cause problems.

Perishable items like meat and cheese trays, pasta dishes, or finger sandwiches should stay refrigerated until the party begins. To keep food safe during gatherings:

  • Arrange food on small platters so it can be refrigerated and rotated within two hours.
  • Use party tray lids as coolers by filling them with ice and placing trays on top.
  • Never leave perishable treats at room temperature for more than two hours.
  • Ensure dough and batters are fully cooked before tasting.
  • Avoid unpasteurized juice or cider, which can carry harmful bacteria.

Food allergies should also be considered when planning a Halloween party. Asking guests about allergies ahead of time can prevent reactions, and non-food items are a safe alternative for trick-or-treaters with allergies.

Parents should inspect candy thoroughly, discarding any treats that are damaged or opened, to ensure Halloween remains a safe and enjoyable celebration.
