The Kansas Silver Haired Legislature (KSHL), a volunteer, non-partisan group representing Kansans aged 60 and older, concluded its annual session this week at the Kansas State Capitol. Delegates passed five resolutions addressing issues important to seniors, which will be presented to the Kansas Legislature and Governor for consideration during the 2026 session.

The resolutions focus on:

  1. Medical Cannabis Access – Supporting Senate Bill 294 to regulate medical cannabis, providing relief for seniors with chronic pain or debilitating conditions.
  2. Property Tax Relief – Backing legislation like Senate Bill 215 to ease property taxes for seniors, helping them maintain stable housing.
  3. Medicaid and Food Assistance – Advocating to preserve and expand Medicaid, home- and community-based services, and SNAP food assistance, supporting seniors living in poverty.
  4. Protecting Voting Rights – Opposing any measures that would restrict seniors’ access to voting. Seniors make up 25% of registered voters and had the highest turnout in the 2024 election.
  5. Senior Transportation – Urging continued funding and local support for community-based transportation, especially in rural and underserved areas.

The KSHL, established in Kansas in 1982, advocates on behalf of older residents statewide through elected delegates from all 105 counties.
