The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has updated its guidelines for monitoring avian influenza, or bird flu, ahead of peak flu season. In January 2025, KDHE issued a health alert noting sporadic human cases and recommended subtyping all influenza A-positive samples.
As of December 11, hospitals are no longer required to complete testing within 24 hours of admission. KDHE continues to say the risk of avian influenza A(H5) to the general public remains low.
KDHE advises the public to avoid touching sick or dead wild birds, poultry, or other animals that may have bird flu. If you must handle them, wear gloves, a mask, and eye protection. Report illness or deaths of five or more wild birds to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks through their website.
For sick poultry or pet birds, contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture at 833-765-2006, email KDA.HPAI@ks.gov, or visit agriculture.ks.gov/AvianInfluenza.
