Poinsettias are a festive addition to any home during the holiday season. Available in red, white, green, pink, or combinations of colors, these plants can be cared for year-round, according to Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

Poinsettias thrive in temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and maintaining consistent conditions is important. They should be kept away from drafts, fireplaces, and space heaters. Bright, indirect light is ideal, and leaves should not touch cold windows.

The soil should remain moist, as drying out completely can cause the plant to wilt and lose leaves. Watering should be done in the sink until water flows through the drainage holes, but the plant should never sit in standing water, including the plastic sleeves often used for sale, as this can cause root rot.

Fertilizing and additional maintenance are not necessary until after the holidays. Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources share tips on plant care in their weekly Horticulture Newsletter, covering home landscapes and gardens.
