Last week, Mallory, Sedgwick County Zoo’s grizzly bear, underwent a full health assessment to ensure she remains healthy and comfortable as she ages.

At 33 years old, Mallory is considered geriatric, making routine wellness exams especially important, the zoo said on its Facebook page. The comprehensive procedure involved the zoo’s veterinary team and a visiting specialist. Dr. Winter from the Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital of Wichita performed a detailed dental exam and found Mallory’s teeth to be in excellent condition for her age.

In addition to the dental check, the veterinary team completed a full physical assessment, closely monitoring Mallory’s overall health and screening for age-related concerns. These routine exams help staff identify potential issues early and adjust care as needed.

While Mallory was under anesthesia, veterinarians also trimmed her nails. Nail care is an important part of bear health, helping prevent overgrowth that could affect mobility and comfort.

Zoo officials say Mallory is doing very well for her age. Her strong health reflects the ongoing, proactive veterinary care she receives at the Sedgwick County Zoo as she continues to thrive in her senior years.
