The Cloud County Law Enforcement Center, commonly known as the Cloud County Jail, will suspend operations for the foreseeable future due primarily to staffing shortages.
Sheriff Ken Davis announced he would halt regular jail operations during a County Commissioners’ meeting on Wednesday, December 31st. As an elected official, Davis has authority over the jail’s operations, and the County Commission does not oversee the facility.
The jail is currently housing inmates, but those incarcerated will be transferred to other county jails, with Cloud County responsible for associated housing costs. The suspension follows the recent resignation of a number of corrections officers, creating challenges in maintaining adequate staffing levels.
Training requirements for the remaining staff and the process of hiring new officers also contributed to the decision. While operations are suspended, the jail will continue to intake and process arrestees before transferring them to other facilities.
