The U.S. Army has decided to retain its military working equid (MWE) programs at Fort Riley, reversing earlier plans to discontinue them. Following a comprehensive review of resources and support, Army leaders determined that the programs provide unique capabilities that enhance readiness, preserve heritage, and strengthen community engagement.
With this announcement, Fort Riley’s Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard can be reestablished and continue serving as a public link between the military and the American people through demonstrations, education, and local events. Army officials emphasized ongoing investments in personnel, infrastructure, and animal care to ensure safety and effectiveness.
As part of this commitment, the Army recently created a new military occupational specialty, Army Equestrian (08H), replacing the former military horseman identifier and establishing a dedicated career path focused on professional equine care and sustaining the Army’s historic equine legacy.
