Bitter Cold and Snow Expected Across Kansas; KDOT Urges Drivers to Limit Travel

Current forecasts predict bitterly cold temperatures and several inches of snow across Kansas starting Friday morning and continuing through Sunday. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is urging residents to limit travel, as conditions will be hazardous for drivers and may make road-clearing efforts more difficult for crews.

Travel in Kansas could be hazardous as dry snow is expected to drift across highways with wind gusts up to 30 mph, reducing visibility and potentially covering roads again shortly after plowing. Extreme cold will limit the effectiveness of salt brine and granular salts, and any melting may quickly refreeze into ice.
Motorists who must travel are advised to check their vehicles, including fluid levels and tire pressure, and keep at least a half tank of gas. Frostbite can occur rapidly in these temperatures, so having an emergency kit in the vehicle is recommended.

Drivers should also stay updated on local weather and road conditions through KanDrive.gov or the KanDrive app, available in the App Store and Google Play.
