Senior Life Solutions at Clay County Medical Center has been named Training Site of the Year, recognizing the program’s work in mentoring behavioral health professionals and providing mental health services for older adults.

Beth Larson, Program Director for Senior Life Solutions, said the program is an outpatient service designed for adults age 65 and older who are experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges related to aging.

Although treatment occurs in a group setting, care plans are tailored to each individual. “Following an individual assessment, they can meet up to three times per week in a supportive encouraging group setting,” said Larson. “Other services offered include the confidential comprehensive assessment, group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy. We also do medication education and management and aftercare planning.”

Larson said the award highlights the staff’s commitment not only to patients but also to professional training. “The honor recognizes the consistency, knowledge, and dedication our staff bring to every professional who walks through our doors to learn,” said Larson. “Honestly, I couldn’t be more proud of all of the staff at Senior Life Solutions. This award is truly a reflection of our commitment to quality patient care for this community and all other communities that we have been able to impact through training across the country.”

Larson said the Clay Center site has had the privilege to host trainees from multiple states, including Texas, Colorado, Idaho, Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, Arkansas, North Dakota, Nebraska, Maine, and Wyoming. She said staff focus on mentorship and modeling compassionate, quality care.

Larson also emphasized the importance of reducing stigma around mental health. “Most of us feel like it’s OK to admit we have physical challenges, like arthritis, heart problems, or diabetes. But mental health challenges are often seen as taboo.” She said sometimes things like headaches, stomach aches, inability to concentrate, or just feeling tired all the time can be a result of a mental health challenge. “Many people just don’t realize that these physical symptoms can come from depression, anxiety, or unmanaged stress,” she said. “We are always available to answer questions and to provide educational in-services and information to any community member.”

Referrals can be made by anyone in the community, including family, friends, neighbors, and even self-referrals. Larson said there is no set time limit for people to be in the program, “Each person’s needs are different. Some may attend for just a few months, while others may participate for 10 months or even over a year.”
