Large Grass Fire Spreads Across Elk, Chautauqua Counties

Elk County Rural Fire Department announced on Facebook that at 1:19 p.m. Monday, units were dispatched to a large grass fire that began in Chautauqua County and spread into Elk County, southeast of Longton. Firefighters from Longton, Elk Falls, Fall River, Moline, Howard, and Grenola, responded, with additional support from Elk City Louisburg Township, Independence Rural Fire, and Cherryvale Rural Fire.

The fire burned an estimated 4,000 acres and threatened several structures, including dwellings. Thanks to the efforts of responding crews, no buildings were lost. Firefighters remained on the scene until 7:45 p.m. before clearing the area.

Elk County Rural Fire expressed gratitude for the assistance of partner districts from Montgomery County, whose mutual aid played a key role in managing the large fire.
