AARP is now accepting applications for the 2026 AARP Community Challenge, a grant program that helps local projects make communities better and easier to live in, especially for people age 50 and older.

Since 2017, AARP has given out more than 2,100 grants totaling $24.3 million to improve public spaces, housing, transportation, and community connections across the country.

The 2026 program has three types of grants:

  • Flagship Grants – for big projects like improving public spaces, making travel easier, or preparing for disasters.
  • Capacity-Building Microgrants – smaller grants with extra support and guidance.
  • Demonstration Grants – for projects that can be copied in other communities.

Nonprofits, local governments, and other eligible groups can apply. Projects must help local residents and match AARP’s goal of making communities better for everyone.

Applications are due March 4, 2026. Winners will be notified in May, and projects should be finished by December 15, 2026.

More information is available on AARP’s Community Challenge page.
