The Kansas Senate is looking at a bill that would make kratom illegal in Kansas. The bill would label kratom as a Schedule I drug, meaning the state would treat it like drugs that are considered highly addictive and not medically approved.
If the bill becomes law, people could face criminal charges for having, selling, or making kratom products. Stores would no longer be allowed to sell it, and personal possession would also be banned.
Supporters say kratom is not well regulated and may cause health problems, including addiction, so a ban would improve public safety. Opponents say banning it completely is too strict and believe it should be regulated instead, with safety and labeling rules.
If lawmakers pass the bill and the governor signs it, the ban could start later this year.
