The Clay Center Community High School (CCCHS) government classes will hold their annual Mock Trial on Monday, February 23rd, at the Clay County Courthouse. This annual event features actual cases that took place in Clay Center.
This year, students will work through four different cases: the Gilbert family murders of 1899, the murder of JB Wellington in 1887, the murder of Frank Newton in 1927, and the murder of an O’Bannon in 1894.
Seniors are chosen as lawyers, witnesses, and jurors. Defendants and prosecutors will research and present facts, cross-examine witnesses, and more. At the end of each trial, jurors will give their verdict.
Government Teacher Tyler Nelson said it’s important for students to see how a courtroom looks and how the trial process works. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the county’s court system and learn valuable skills in speaking, collaboration, and more.
