Governor Laura Kelly has signed Executive Order 26-01, temporarily waiving certain rules for commercial motor vehicle carriers and drivers helping with relief efforts following wildfires in Kansas.
The governor issued a verbal state of disaster on February 15, 2026, after several large fires caused extensive property and agricultural damage, followed by a written disaster declaration on February 24. Under the emergency proclamation, certain hours-of-service requirements for drivers providing direct emergency assistance are waived for up to 14 days from the verbal declaration.
“As Kansas communities grapple with the impacts of these damaging wildfires, it’s essential that they have access to additional resources for response and recovery efforts,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “In signing this executive order, we’re taking a critical step to facilitate the delivery of hay and other supplies that our farmers and ranchers need for fire suppression and emergency recovery.”
Executive Order 26-01 also suspends some size and permit fee requirements for motor carriers involved in restoration and relief operations. Carriers must still obtain over-dimension permits through the Kansas Department of Transportation, but associated fees are temporarily waived.
Officials say the measure is designed to streamline support for affected communities and ensure timely delivery of relief and restoration resources.
