Safe Families for Children is expanding its volunteer-driven support network across north central Kansas to help families facing crises such as homelessness, domestic violence, hospitalization, or overwhelming stress. The faith-based organization works to keep children safe and families together by preventing unnecessary foster care placements.

Chapter Director Brittany Willer said the program connects parents with a “circle of support” comprising of host families, family friends, and resource volunteers. Host families may care for children for a few hours, days, or weeks while parents regain stability, while other volunteers provide mentorship, transportation, or needed supplies.

Parents must contact Safe Families directly through the statewide intake line to begin the process, ensuring they maintain control and ownership of their situation. After intake, a family coach typically responds within four hours and helps build a support network within 24 hours.

Safe Families currently serves Dickinson, Saline, McPherson, and Ellsworth counties and is actively recruiting volunteers across the region.
