Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach is warning residents to be careful of scams from unregistered roofing contractors after recent storms. Recent storms brought hail to Saline, Kingman, Nemaha, and Barber counties, and a tornado touched down in Sumner County.

Homeowners should always ask roofing contractors for a registration certificate or registration number and check that the company is listed as “In Good Standing” on the Kansas Attorney General’s online Roofing Registration Directory.

Working with a registered roofer is the first step to avoid problems. The attorney general’s office also recommends:

  • Getting references and recommendations.
  • Collecting at least three written estimates from different contractors.
  • Checking complaint records with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Understanding payment terms and your right to cancel.

Kansas law requires most roofing contractors to register with the attorney general before offering services for a fee. Registration ensures contractors meet state requirements, including proper insurance, and helps prevent fraud.

Residents are asked to report any unregistered contractors to the Attorney General’s Civil Division, Licensing and Inspections Unit online or by calling 785-368-6644.
