The Riley County Health Department announced that registration is open for Camp Kindergarten. This free program, now in its eleventh year, teaches kids skills and helps them build confidence before entering kindergarten.
“Kids make significant improvements in sound identification and rhyming skills and get used to the routines and tasks of school,” said Chelsea Manwarren, Raising Riley Community Outreach Coordinator. “Getting to experience a classroom setting for a short period helps kids build confidence and overcome fears.”

The half-day sessions (morning or afternoons) will take place at Bluemont Elementary school in Manhattan from June 1-26 and are led by USD 383 licensed elementary teachers and support staff.
Camp Kindergarten includes many of the same activities children will see in school, such as reading and math practice, art projects, sensory play, recess, and snack time. Children also learn important classroom skills like taking turns, listening, following routines, and building independence and confidence to help them start kindergarten successfully.

Families must apply by Friday, May 1. Parents can complete an online application at www.rileycountyks.gov/CampK or contact the Riley County Health Department to apply. Space is limited, and priority will be given to children from low-income families, those considered at-risk, children of teen parents, or those who have not attended preschool. Applications are available in English and Spanish.
