On Saturday, March 21st, Lindsborg, Kansas will celebrate its annual tradition, Lindsborg Våffeldagen. This translates to “waffle day” in English.
In an article written by Visit Lindsborg, Carla Wilson, event founder, said, “In Sweden and most of Europe, people mark the day by eating waffles. In Lindsborg, we eat waffles plus we welcome waffle creativity – jokes, parody songs, hats, clothing, jewelry, visual references, and anything that is waffle-y.”
According to the article, for hundreds of years, Swedes and many Scandinavians have recognized the nine-month mark before Christmas. This countdown was first known in Swedish as ‘Vårfrudagen’, which in English translates to ‘Our Lady’s Day’.
“Through mispronunciations over time, the word Vårfrudagen morphed into ‘Våffeldagen,’ which means waffle day.”
Various forms of waffle tasting will be available from 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Lindsborg. There will be Belgian breakfast waffles with bacon, chicken and waffles, waffle ice cream sandwiches, and more.
Visitors can have their photo taken with Lindsborg Waffle People. Dressed in waffle costumes, they will be walking around town with menus, gifts, and information for visitors.
There will also be waffle games and interactive waffle art for children.
