John M. Shum, 70, of Home, KS, died August 30, 2022, at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville.
Visitation will be Friday, September 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville.
A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. Father Quentin Schmitz and Father James Shaughnessy will officiate.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 3, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church.
Burial will be in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Jesse Edwards, Josh Smith, John McKeever, Mark Dwerlkotte, Jerod Kruse and Jimmy Lopez.
John was born March 8, 1952, at Concordia, KS, son of Charles “Elvin” and Bessie “Bess” B. (Holbrook) Shum. He attended Lincoln Elementary School in Marysville and graduated from Marysville High School in 1970. He attended two years of college at Colby, KS, and received his degree in Livestock Production.
On August 31, 1974, he married JoAnn Pitsch at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church.
He worked for a large cattle operation near Colby before moving back to Home. John did custom windrowing and worked for Continental Grain then Home City Grain for over 40 years, serving as manager for many years.
John was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and also attended St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Beattie. He helped and served on various committees including St. Gregory’s Catholic Church Finance Council, Home City Council, Home City Water District, Home City Sewer Board, Home City Volunteer Fire Department, Home City Ballpark Committee and Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed going fishing, farming, driving the grain cart, mowing not only his yard but many other yards and the ballpark, team roping and rodeos, having coffee with friends at the gas station, playing cards at Hap’s, counting donation money at church, and spending time with his grandchildren doing various projects including woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Steve and William Shum.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; sons, Joe (Candice) Shum, Shawnee, KS, and Jim (Amy) Shum, Home; daughter, Katy (Jarrod) Smith, Frankfort, KS; brother, Larry (Kathy) Shum, Marysville, Keith (Becky) Shum, El Dorado, KS; sisters, Cindy (Tom) Graham, St. Marys, KS, and Marie (Rob) Maloney, Wichita, KS; sister-in-law, Donna Shum, Stafford, NY; and nine grandchildren, Ruthie, Jai and Bodhi Shum; Lydia, Charlie and Layla Shum; and Colson, Myla and Deacon Smith.
A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
