Lawrence Herrs, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, November 21, 2022 after a prolonged illness.
Visitation will be held December 1, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. December 2, 2022 at the Washington Christian Church in Washington.
Lawrence was born February 24, 1940 in Clay Center,to Alfred and Lucile (Stuenkel) Herrs the oldest of five siblings. In 1958, he graduated from Linn High School.
He met his wife, Cara Burton, at the Swirly Top Restaurant in Washington. They married September 14, 1963. Lawrence worked at Schumachers IH dealership, Bruna Implement and owned two service stations. He was a lawn service contractor and he custom built a stump cutter for tree removal. Lawrence and Cara started the Herrs Machine business of hydrostatic rebuilds. He restored antique tractors and cars for their museum and their customers. One of his restorations, a 1949 IHC cream truck, was donated to the city of Linn and is displayed in the museum there.
Lawrence was a long-time member of the Haddam Church of God of Prophecy and IHC Collectors. He was a founding member of the Linn Creamery Museum.
Lawrence worked long hours most of his life, he liked figuring out challenges and always wanted his work to be of quality, he never cut corners. He was known for his excellent memory.
Lawrence’s faith and trust in God was important to him. During his last months of lide, though he remained hopeful of being healed, he was never fearful of death because he was confident of his salvation and sure he would be spending eternity with his Lord and Savior.
Preceding him in death were his parents; grandson, Tyler Burt; and brother-in-law, Don Dodd.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Cara; children, Dana (Theresa) Herrs, Washington, Angie (Kurt) Staggenborg, Marysville, Corey Herrs, Tucson, AZ; siblings, Joan (John) Kosal, Palmer, Leonard (Vivian) Herrs, Clifton, Joyce Dodd, Linn, Larry (Carolyn) Herrs, Abilene and Judy (Donnie) Bisping, Linn; grandchildren, Brett Herrs, Jenna Staggenborg, Trent Staggenborg and Aleah Staggenborg, (who all affectionately called him “Opa”); as well as meny nieces, nephews and close friends.
A memorial fund is established to KSDS or the Washington County Historical Museum, Washington. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
