On May 9th, the Washington County Fairgrounds buzzed with excitement and discovery as 95 fourth-grade students from across the county gathered for the annual Washington County Ag Day. Representing Clifton/Clyde, Washington, Hanover, St. John, and Linn schools, these young learners participated in a full day of hands-on education focused on the diverse world of agriculture.
Throughout the day, students rotated through interactive stations that introduced them to a variety of agricultural topics. Presentations included conservation, nutrition, floriculture, wildlife, livestock, dairy production, veterinary care, grain bin safety, large equipment awareness, and electrical safety. Each session offered a glimpse into the daily lives of those who work in agriculture and emphasized the importance of safety, sustainability, and science in modern farming practices.
Ag Day serves as more than just a fun field trip — it’s a vital opportunity to connect the next generation with the agricultural roots that support their communities. As fewer children grow up on farms, experiences like these ensure that students understand where their food comes from, the science behind food production, and the essential role agriculture plays in their everyday lives.
We hope that Ag Day not only expands students’ knowledge but also plants the seeds for future leadership, innovation, and stewardship in agriculture.
Washington County Ag Day would not be possible without the generous support and dedication of our sponsors and presenters. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the local businesses, and organizations who gave their time, expertise, and resources to make this day a success for our fourth-grade students.
