The nomination had this to say:

“In honor of National Fire Department Day, which is May 4, the Herington Fire Department and the many volunteers who dedicate their time to serving this area should be recognized for their efforts.  The Fire Department in Herington has been serving the community since 1890 and is predominantly made up of volunteers.  They answer every call 24/7 to assist, save, and help whenever there is an emergency.  They cover a 96-square-mile fire district in Dickinson and Morris Counties with a 500-square-mile area of coverage for rescue.  In addition to the EMS calls that they normally attend to, there has been an increase in medical calls as well.  They also answer other calls for vehicle accidents, house fires, gas leaks, etc.  They even take on the responsibility of storm spotting.  Some calls take 30 minutes and others take hours.  This city is lucky to have such wonderful people taking care of us.  They define the word hero in every sense.”
