Manhattan Tech is awarded $668K Grant for Rural Workforce Development

The Patterson Family Foundation has awarded Manhattan Area Technical College a $668,000 grant to bolster the rural economy by enhancing education in critical industries. The grant focuses on students in grades 6-12 and aims to strengthen professions essential to rural communities, including Welding, Construction, HVAC-R, Electrical, Automotive Services, and Industrial Machinery Mechanics. Rural counties such as Clay, Geary, and Pottawatomie will benefit from the initiative.

Manhattan Tech President Jim Genandt emphasized that the funding allows students to earn credentials and college credits at little to no cost, paving pathways to in-demand careers. The grant also supports the creation of a Mobile Technology Lab, equipped with virtual and augmented reality tools, to deliver cutting-edge training directly to rural areas.

High school teachers will receive training, equipment, and mentorship to effectively teach hands-on and technology-driven lessons. Furthermore, community engagement will be enhanced as parents, counselors, and workforce specialists participate in virtual and practical experiences, empowering them to promote these careers to youth.

This investment aligns with the Foundation’s mission to sustain rural economies by cultivating a skilled talent pool for vital industries, ensuring long-term economic and social well-being.
