Elizabeth Weese, director of the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, presented a $1,000 Youth in Action grant to Beau McWilliams and Abilene Public Library Director Wendy Moulton on December 22nd. The grant will fund a new STEM-focused addition to the library’s Teen and Technology Department, centered on hands-on learning through 3D printing.

McWilliams received the grant to launch a maker initiative that introduces teens to applied STEM concepts by allowing them to design and create tangible projects. Funds will be used to purchase a 3D printer, filament, tools, and a mobile cart to ensure accessibility within the library.

McWilliams collaborated with Moulton beginning in the fall to align the project with the library’s mission of supporting learning and modern resources. He will also develop training materials and safety procedures for responsible use.

The initiative is designed to grow over time, encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. The 3D printing program is expected to launch in March.
