U.S. Senator Jerry Moran helped secure $20 million in federal funding for The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) in a recent appropriations package signed into law by the President.
“From treating cancer to conducting life-saving research to providing care for patients with a wide range of medical needs, The University of Kansas Health System is making a lasting difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones,” said Sen. Moran. “These federal resources will be used to purchase equipment for the new KU Cancer Center to help fight and cure cancer and will support the expansion of the psychiatric-safe emergency department at the main hospital campus, making upgrades to provide life-saving resources and care for patients in Kansas and the region.”
Half of the funding, $10 million, will go to the new KU Cancer Center to purchase equipment for the facility. This comes on top of the $36 million Sen. Moran secured last month to finish construction, bringing his total federal investment in the project to $115 million since 2022. The new cancer center, which Sen. Moran helped break ground in May 2025, will combine cancer care and research in a single, modern facility.
The remaining $10 million will support the expansion of the psychiatric-safe emergency department at TUKHS’ main hospital campus. The funds will cover construction costs, equipment, and supplies, increasing capacity for patients with severe mental health needs. The expanded emergency department will also improve services in the psychiatric liaison, sexual assault forensic exam, and general emergency units.
