A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck early Saturday morning just south-southeast of Hill City, Kansas, briefly shaking parts of northern Kansas and nearby areas in southern Nebraska.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake hit at 5:26 a.m. local time, about 6 kilometers from Hill City at a shallow depth of 7.3 kilometers. While no damage or injuries have been reported, residents in towns like Norton, Colby, and McCook, Nebraska, may have felt light tremors.
The epicenter was near U.S. Route 283 and Highway 24, in a rural area between Hays and the Nebraska border. Earthquakes are uncommon in this region, but Saturday’s tremor highlights the area’s potential for seismic activity.
Officials encourage residents to report any shaking to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” website to improve intensity data. Though aftershocks are unlikely, monitoring will continue through the weekend.
This is one of the strongest quakes recorded in the region in recent months.
