The American Red Cross is encouraging people to start the new year by volunteering in 2026, highlighting several ways to help communities across Kansas.
Volunteers make up about 90% of the Red Cross workforce and support many of its daily operations. Their work includes responding to disasters, helping hospital patients, supporting blood drives, and assisting military families.
One opportunity is serving as a Blood Transportation Specialist, delivering blood and blood products to local hospitals. Volunteers can choose scheduled shifts or respond to urgent requests when hospitals need blood quickly. Another option is becoming a Blood Donor Ambassador, helping greet donors, assist with registration, answer questions, and provide refreshments after donations to ensure a positive experience.
The Red Cross also relies on volunteers during emergencies. Disaster Action Team members respond to local disasters such as house fires, providing immediate support and helping families begin recovery. Duty Officers support these efforts remotely by coordinating and dispatching volunteers to disaster scenes and working with emergency partners.
The Red Cross says these roles offer flexible schedules and meaningful ways to support neighbors in need. Those interested can sign up online to volunteer in 2026.
