On March 28, Sheriff Alan Benninga reported that there was another fire in Southern Clay County on the evening of March 27th. The fire was located half a mile east of K-15 on the north side of 9th Road.
“We’ve been dealing with suspicious pasture fires of unknown origins,” Benninga said.
Additional fires were also reported on March 22nd, March 15th and 16th. Locations were 9th and Osage Roads, 12th and Limestone Roads, 10th Road and K-15, and 14th and Frontier Roads.
All fires have been contained to farm ground and were extinguished by firefighters, volunteers, and area landowners.
Benninga said the Sheriff’s Department asks for the public to be vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity in the rural area.
At this point, Benninga said there is nothing concrete to share on leads and that the case is ongoing.
Anyone with information on the fires or strange activity in the area should reach out to Detective Sergeant Primeaux or Undersheriff Werbin at (785)632-5601 extension 5 or via email at jprimeaux@cysheriff.org or mwerbin@cysheriff.org.
