Armyworms Threaten Kansas Lawns: K-State Experts Urge Prompt Action as Infestations Rise

Insects that can damage your lawn if not treated promptly are appearing in Kansas, with armyworms returning to the state. Over the past month, the K-State Extension Office in Sedgwick County has received reports of fall armyworms. While these pests show up annually, their numbers fluctuate. This year’s population is not as severe as previous years, when lawns in Wichita and surrounding areas were heavily affected.

K-State Horticulture Agent Matt McKernan warns that a severe infestation can turn a lawn from green to brown in just 24-48 hours. While South Central Kansas hasn’t seen extreme numbers this year, armyworms are expected to remain active for a few more weeks until cold weather drives them south.

To control fall armyworms, experts recommend spraying insecticides when they are active in your lawn. Preventative treatments aren’t available, so control measures are only effective once the pests are present. Spraying in the evening is most effective, as armyworms are more active at that time.
