Barton Community College announced it will no longer receive the federal grant that has supported the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for nearly 50 years. This loss significantly impacts Barton County and the many residents who depend on services like the delivery of over 1,200 Meals on Wheels each month and transportation to critical medical appointments.
Despite the funding cut, Barton Community College remains committed to continuing these essential services. College leadership is exploring new options to sustain programs and support local seniors and families. A temporary safety net is already in place, ensuring services continue throughout the rest of the year.
The College’s Institutional Advancement division is leading efforts to secure new funding, including state, federal, and foundation grants. In response to widespread cuts affecting over 1,000 programs nationwide, especially in rural areas. Barton is also launching a fundraising campaign through the Barton Foundation.
College staff and community partners are working together to identify alternative funding, reduce costs, and maintain services. Their shared goal is to ensure that no resident who relies on these programs is left without support.
