As temperatures rise and conditions dry out, the risk of wildfires increases across Kansas. May is National Wildfire Awareness Month—a timely reminder from the Kansas Department of Insurance for homeowners to assess and reduce fire risks around their property.

Here are key steps to help protect your home from wildfire damage:

• Clear flammable materials from around structures and avoid outdoor burning.
• Clean your chimney regularly and consider installing a spark arrestor.
• Keep a garden hose—at least 100 feet long—connected to an outdoor faucet for emergencies.
• Maintain a defensible space by trimming grass and vegetation within 105 feet of buildings. Remove branches, sticks, and store woodpiles or fuel tanks at least 30 feet from any structure.
