Congressman Derek Schmidt announced he has cosponsored the Credit for Caring Act, a bipartisan bill that would provide working family caregivers with a non-refundable tax credit of up to $5,000 annually. The goal is to ease the financial burden caregivers face while supporting their loved ones at home.

In Kansas, nearly one in five adults serves as a caregiver, and about 85% of them are unpaid, according to the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. Nationally, an estimated 48 million people provide care, often spending an average of $7,242 per year—roughly 26% of their income—on caregiving expenses, according to AARP.

The Credit for Caring Act, introduced by Congressman Mike Carey as H.R. 2036, aims to help caregivers balance employment and caregiving responsibilities. Congressman Schmidt said the measure would offer much-needed financial relief for those who dedicate time and resources to support their families.

The legislation is supported by AARP, the Alzheimer’s Association, Home Care Association of America, AMAC Action, Family Business Coalition, and the American Seniors Housing Association.
