Volunteer firefighters are often the first to answer the call when emergencies strike. Balancing full-time jobs, families, and service, these individuals play a vital role in protecting their neighbors.
Black Hills Energy has recognized that commitment through its annual giving campaign, with this year’s focus on Funds for Firefighters. The grant program supports volunteer fire departments across the company’s service territory.
In 2025, more than $135,000 in grants were awarded to departments in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Funding was used to purchase protective gear such as coats, boots, and helmets, as well as specialized tools like hydraulic rescue equipment. Departments also invested in essentials including radios, hoses, chainsaws, lighting equipment, and even new fire hall construction.
Volunteer firefighters often do far more than fight fires. Many serve as EMTs, lead search and rescue missions, teach fire safety in schools, and provide community services such as child car seat checks.
Since 2001, the Black Hills Corporation Foundation has granted more than $8.3 million to over 500 organizations across eight states. More than 250 Black Hills Energy employees also serve as volunteer firefighters, underscoring the company’s commitment to community safety.
