In a virtual press conference on Wednesday, July 2, Rep. Sharice Davids of Kansas criticized the budget proposal put forward by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, calling it “extreme” and harmful to working families. Davids said the plan prioritizes tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations while cutting essential services, including Medicaid and nutrition assistance programs like SNAP.
Rep. Davids warned the proposal could put health care for 90,000 Kansans at risk, lead to rural hospital closures, and reduce access to reproductive care. She also expressed concern about how cuts to SNAP could raise food prices and hurt small grocery stores in rural communities.
She highlighted her support for an alternative framework backed by the New Democrat Coalition that aims to lower costs, expand the child tax credit, boost caregiving support, and encourage domestic manufacturing.
Rep. Davids said she’s working with both parties to push for changes and emphasized that Kansans deserve responsible budgeting—not policies that make life harder for working families.
