Chiefs Seek Extension for Kansas Stadium Financing, Hinting at Possible Move

The Kansas City Chiefs have requested an extension to the June deadline for a stadium financing package from Kansas, signaling the possibility of moving the team across the state line from Missouri. Chiefs president Mark Donovan sent a letter to Kansas Senate president Ty Masterson stating the team has made “significant progress” but needs more time to finalize plans.

The Chiefs and Royals currently share the Truman Sports Complex in Missouri, but leases expire in 2031. Kansas lawmakers are considering extending incentives for a new stadium, which could include a domed facility, team headquarters, practice fields, and an entertainment district.

Recent moves by Royals affiliates buying property in Overland Park add to speculation. Donovan called the project “the largest economic development initiative in the state’s history” and highlighted the potential boost to tourism and private investment.

The decision on Kansas’ extension will be made by the Legislative Coordinating Council on July 7.
