Choose the Arts Camp Offered in Marysville and Valley Heights

Registrations are being accepted for Choose the Arts, a weeklong summer camp that provides arts education for elementary students. The camp will be held at Valley Heights Junior-Senior High School May 22 through May 26; the camp will be repeated in Marysville May 30 through June 2.

The camp is sponsored by the Marshall County Arts Cooperative.

The camp starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. for students leaving first grade to those leaving sixth grade.  In Valley Heights, the camp will be at the junior-senior high school, 2274 6th Road, Blue Rapids; in Marysville, the camp will be at Marysville High School, 1011 Walnut Street.

Campers will be immersed in arts activities by age group: visual arts, theater, instrumental music, movement and vocal music.

Instructors are Pat Breeding, drama; Catherine Kee, drama; Megan Kirkland, instrumental music; Hannah Malotte, music and movement; Julie Popejoy, vocal music; and April Spicer, visual arts.

All of the classes will involve hands-on activities.

Campers will be assigned to groups with high school and college-aged students as counselors to facilitate supervision and engagement.

Instruction will also be provided on the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as bullying prevention.  Matt Simpson, Marysville chief of police, will teach these classes.

The fee for the Valley Heights camp is $75; the fee for the Marysville camp is $65. Scholarships are available.  The fee includes a T-shirt.

The arts cooperative received a grant from Blue Valley Technologies and the Foundation for Rural Service to help sponsor the camp.
