City Approves Change Order for Multi-Generational Life Center

Clay Center City Council held their regular meeting on October 7th at City Hall. During the meeting, Mayor Jimmy Thatcher announced that the City has enough funds to enact change option one for the Multi-Generational Life Center.

This change order includes the complete finishing of the senior, youth, and kitchen buildout. Previously, plans were to complete the shell of this area until funds were obtained to finish the square footage.

The total for this alternate option is $660,933 plus $36,351 in design fees. Council unanimously passed the approval for the change order.

Project Manager from SPT Architects, Kyle Montoya, was in attendance and said there had been no increase in the price.

“We’re pleased to announce, all our partners said prices were still valid so there’s no price increase,” he said. “Really, the remaining piece is finishing the gym.”

Mayor Thatcher said donation amounts are getting closer to funding the finishing of the gyms and reminded Council about the matching donation, which runs through November 1. Up to $500,000 will be matched toward the project.

Councilman Keith Blake asked about funding for a storm shelter. Mayor Thatcher said it is still underway, and the City remains within timeline parameters. A federal grant also remains in review for storm shelter funding.

“You have to have it, or you can’t open a daycare,” Blake said. “That’s state law.”

City Clerk Amelia Blackwood said all plans and licenses have already been approved by the state.

Next, Council discussed the approval of building permits and additional addresses that were sent to Council to consider for condemnation.

Councilman Mike Schultze said they had begun the process of review, which includes researching who owns the property.

They also discussed July sales tax, which totaled $51,615 and said the barometer remains on track with projections.
