The Clay Center Aquatic Park has had some setbacks but now has a tentative opening day. Originally set to open Memorial Day, an unexpected leak caused a minor delay. Phil Kasper, 1st ward Clay Center City Council and chairman of the Parks and Recs Commission said that when they went to fill the pool this season they noticed it was losing 6-12 inches of water per day. Upon further inspection, it appeared concrete had settled and caused a small leak in the fill pit. They also needed to tend to expansion joints that had come loose, believed to be due to improper finishing when the pool was repainted last spring.
Last week the leak was fixed, and the expansion joints were sealed correctly. The paint and sealant had to cure for 4 days and yesterday the crew went back to check the repairs. So far everything looks good. Kasper says they hope to start filling the pool within the next couple of days and have a tentative opening date of Monday, June 5th.
