Six viruses, including COVID-19, influenza A and B, RSV, human metapneumovirus and norovirus, have been detected at high levels in Lawrence wastewater as flu season peaks. The Kansas Reflector reported that health officials say wastewater data shows illness trends in the community but does not reflect exact case counts, and high levels of respiratory illness are typical this time of year.

Lawrence is experiencing an early rise in influenza B, with positive flu tests spiking in late 2025. Data from the University of Kansas Health System shows 32% of flu tests were positive during that period. In response to a surge in respiratory illnesses, some providers, including KU’s Watkins Health Center, have reinstated mask requirements.

Wastewater data also shows the XFG, or Stratus, COVID-19 variant now makes up more than 80% of positive samples locally, with levels rising in the past month. Health officials stress vaccination remains the best protection, noting many people are still unvaccinated against the flu.
