On Thursday, December 4, the Cold Moon returns and is the third and final supermoon of the year.

The 2025 Cold Moon will be visible from Thursday afternoon through Friday’s sunrise. For the most impressive view, the Old Farmers Almanac says to look just after moonrise, when the Moon seems larger near the horizon, a visual trick known as the “Moon illusion.” Clear skies and low light pollution will make its brightness and surface details even more striking.

This Moon will also climb high in the sky, so you won’t need an unobstructed horizon to see it, it will be visible even from towns and cities. Its height comes from Earth’s tilt as it orbits the Sun. Essentially, the Moon mirrors the Sun’s path: when the Moon is full, it sits opposite the Sun, fully illuminating the Earth-facing side.
