Derek Schmidt Sworn in as Congressman for Kansas’ Second District, Bringing Decades of Leadership Experience

Congressman Derek Schmidt was sworn into office on January 3, 2025, to represent Kansas’ Second District.

A fifth-generation Kansan from Independence, Schmidt previously served 12 years as the 44th Attorney General of Kansas. During his tenure, he prioritized prosecuting crimes against children, protecting seniors from scams, recovering over $1 billion for Kansas consumers and taxpayers, challenging federal overreach, and providing legal services for the state.

Schmidt successfully argued three Kansas cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and spearheaded efforts to modernize the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s forensic science laboratory. He also worked to strengthen state laws on human trafficking and consumer privacy.

Before becoming attorney general, Schmidt served as a Kansas State Senator representing Southeast Kansas. He chaired the Senate Agriculture Committee and served as Senate Majority Leader.
