Don’t Forget Fido: June is Pet Preparedness Month—Make a Plan to Keep Pets Safe in Emergencies

June is Pet Preparedness Month, a great time to update your emergency plan to protect your pets. Just like family members, pets rely on you for their safety in a disaster.

Start by creating a pet emergency plan. Identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or friends and family who can help. Keep a list of contacts and know that most Red Cross shelters only allow service animals, though they may assist with finding housing for pets. Include pets in evacuation drills to help them stay calm during transport.

Be sure your pets are vaccinated, wear ID tags, and consider microchipping.

Pack a pet emergency kit with food, water, bowls, medications, leashes, medical records, a photo of you with your pet, and comfort items like beds and toys.
