Equine Virus Outbreak Forces Cancellation of 2025 Lawrence Christmas Parade

The 2025 Lawrence Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade, scheduled for Dec. 6, has been canceled because of a multistate outbreak of equine herpesvirus. The parade has been a Lawrence staple for more than 30 years, drawing tens of thousands of spectators and featuring nearly 50 horse-drawn entries from Kansas and surrounding states.

Organizers said the decision followed confirmed cases of the virus in eight states, including Colorado and Oklahoma. Although no cases have been reported in Kansas, veterinarians warn the highly contagious illness spreads easily among horses, especially when they travel or gather.

The virus does not affect humans, but it can cause fever, respiratory issues, pregnancy losses, and, in rare cases, neurological problems that impair movement. Organizers hope the parade will return in 2026.

The Lawrence Old Fashioned Christmas Parade provided the following statement on its website:

“Due to the recent outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus we have consulted the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division on Animal Health. Although to date there have been no confirmed cases in Kansas, the Department has suggested the following for our Parade:

We require negative coggins (within 12 months) for every horse and mule going through the parade. Out of state entries must show a current (within 30 days) certificate of veterinary inspection (health papers).

Please provide a copy of your coggins papers for us to keep.

If you wish to cancel, Please inform us as soon as possible.”
