Evergy is joining United Utilities Against Scams to recognize Utility Scam Awareness Day on November 19, a nationwide effort to warn customers about the growing threat of utility scams. In recent years, scammers have pretended to be Evergy employees, using new technology and the rise of online bill-paying to trick people through fake websites, phone numbers, and QR codes. The Federal Trade Commission reported $12.5 billion lost to cyber scams last year, a sharp increase from the year before.

Evergy reminds customers to be cautious. Make sure you pay your bill only through the official Evergy website. Evergy will never demand immediate payment or threaten to disconnect power within an hour. They also do not accept payments through apps like Cash App or Venmo, and they will not ask for gift cards. Any discounts or programs offered by Evergy will always be posted on their website.

Customers can protect themselves by using strong passwords, turning on multi-factor authentication, being careful with emails and links, and backing up important data. Anyone who encounters suspicious activity should report it to Evergy and local law enforcement.
