May is National Electrical Safety Month, and Evergy is reminding customers to stay safe around electricity—at home, at work, at school, and outdoors.
With warmer weather and more outdoor activities, Evergy offers the following safety tips:
Call 811 before digging. Many utility lines, including Evergy’s, may be buried underground. Calling 811 ensures utility crews will mark the lines before you dig.
Watch for power lines. Always look up when using ladders, working on rooftops or trees, or carrying long tools. Keep outdoor toys like kites and trampolines away from power lines. Stay at least 30 feet away from any downed lines, and call Evergy or 911 if you see one.
Check outdoor electrical equipment. Use outdoor-rated cords and lights, avoid wet areas, and check cords for damage. Outdoor outlets should have protective covers.
Handle mylar balloons with care. Keep them away from power lines—these balloons can cause outages by conducting electricity.
Stay alert and use equipment properly to help prevent electrical accidents. Visit Evergy’s website for more safety tips.
