Poinsettias, with their vibrant colors, make a festive addition to any home during the holidays. Available in red, white, pink, green, and various combinations, they can thrive year-round, according to Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.
“Poinsettias do best with temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit,” Domenghini said. “Consistency is key, so avoid drafts from windows or heat sources, such as the fireplace or space heaters.”
They need bright, indirect light but should not touch cold windows. Keep the soil moist, as completely dry soil can cause wilting and leaf loss. Water thoroughly until it drains, but avoid leaving the plant in standing water, which can cause root rot. Fertilizing is not necessary until after the holiday season.
Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens.
