Expert Tips to Keep Valentine’s Day Roses Fresh Longer

Roses given on Valentine’s Day often start to fade quickly after Feb. 14. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini shares tips to keep floral arrangements and loose stems fresh longer.

For arrangements, ensure the vase or floral foam is always filled with water and refresh it daily. If the water turns cloudy, replace it right away. Recut the stems by 1-2 inches when changing the water to help the flowers absorb more.

Keep flowers in a cool area (65-72°F) away from sunlight, heating or cooling vents, fans, and radiators.

For loose stems, place them in a clean vase with water and florist-provided flower food. Remove any leaves below the waterline to avoid bacterial growth, and cut the stems right before placing them in the water. If you can’t use flower food right away, keep the flowers cool until you can.
